Back in 2013, my business was doing pretty well.
I was running regular workshops, my database was growing steadily, I had a handful of private clients and I’d just started my first Mastermind.
All in all, we’d done somewhere in the region of £350k in the previous year.
Like I said, it was going pretty well.
Mainly because I was obsessively learning about all the latest marketing tactics, and furiously implementing as much as I possibly could.
And it worked - to a point.
One month I’d put all my time, energy, and resources into running a promotion, and we’d make a load of sales.
The problem?
I’d then spend the next couple of months delivering on those sales.
Meaning I was in a constant cycle of feast and famine.
Maybe you can relate?
It’s draining, it’s stressful and it’s impossible to maintain (without burning out).
Looking back, I realise I also had no idea when it came to some of the fundamentals of business:
In other words, I had no strategy.
Which meant there was no consistency in the business.
My small team didn’t know whether they were coming or going week to week.
I was ‘winging it’ and giving them zero direction, and it was exhausting for all of us.
Then in September 2014, I attended a workshop in Phoenix, Arizona.
The guys running it had built a $100m company from scratch in 10 years, so I figured they knew a thing or two when it came to growing a business.
Over 2 days, they outlined how they’d planned for growth and achieved it, year on year.
The funny thing was, there was no talk of new marketing fads or tactics. What we learned was many levels above that stuff.
At the end of those 2 days, we had greater clarity on what we were doing (and more importantly, when we were going to do it) than ever before.
That alone was a MASSIVE win.
The team were so happy, that after years of ‘winging it’ we finally had a concrete plan.
But what happened next blew my mind...
In the 3 months that followed, we generated more revenue than we had in the previous 12 months combined.
And…
In the following year, we tripled the business and did over £1m for the first time ever!
Since then, I’ve adapted the strategic planning process I learned back in 2014 and created my own version, especially for Coaching, Consulting, Mentoring, Speaking, Training, and other ‘Expert’ businesses.
This process gives you clarity and focus on exactly what you need to do in the next week, month, quarter, and year, to make the impact and income you want.

The Expert Empires Story
Even though the first Expert Empires event took place in May 2017, in many ways, the Expert Empires story began a couple of years before that.
Let me explain…
In 2015, I co-owned a very successful events company.
We hosted big events for 500+ people at a time, which meant one thing: a big pay-out every few months.
Then, I had a meeting with Gary Vaynerchuk. And it changed everything.
I’ll be honest with you, I knew exactly what I wanted when I went into the room. I figured that if we booked Gary, we’d sell the event out in record time.
We could then pitch loads of different products and services and make an absolute killing.
Great plan, right?
Gary didn't think so!
He shot me down in about 30 seconds flat.
You see, whilst I *thought* our events were providing great value, the truth is, they were all about making money. That was the primary motivator.
And Gary knew it. He *totally* called me on my bulls***. And he flatly refused to do it, even though I was willing to pay his hefty speaking fee.
He looked me dead in the eye and asked me why I was REALLY doing these events. Why I’d got into this industry back in 2009. And what I wanted my legacy to be.
Gary told me that I wasn’t ready to partner with him or host an event with him headlining.
I needed to go away, start doing it right, and then Gary might think about working together.
“You’ll probably make less money in the next year, but how you make your money is far more important than how much money you make”
I know it sounds clichéd, but I left that meeting a different person. And since that day, I’ve focused on building my business the ‘right’ way.
I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job. Is it perfect? No. Have I made mistakes? Hell yes!
It turned out Gary was wrong about one thing, though…
I actually made MORE in the year that followed that meeting than I ever had before.
Since that fateful meeting, I’ve generated over £10million from my various events, Masterminds, and coaching programmes.
If nothing else, this whole experience taught me one important lesson…
You don’t have to be all ‘hard sell’ in order to be successful.
